Watch the Video Tutorial HERE!

So you want to build a propagation station but don't have a drill.  The internet is lousy with all kinds of tutorials for DIY propagation stations, but options are limited for those without power tools.

Here's a versatile tutorial for a prop station that requires only a few simple craft tools and inexpensive supplies.  You can get all the tools and supplies you need from your local dollar or discount store!

 The tools you'll need are:
  • a sharp craft knife
  • a palette knife or spatula
  • a nail file and/or a scrap of sandpaper
  • painting stuff
The supplies you'll need are:
  • 3 waterproof vials/ test tubes
  • a sheet of foam board (1 per each)
  • white PVA glue
  • wall spackle
  • acrylic paint
  • corn starch (optional)
The template for the freeform shape I demonstrate is a FREE DOWNLOAD. You can use this technique to make a prop station of just about any size and shape - no need to follow the template!

Following is a brief step-by-step, but I highly recommend you check out the video tutorial on my You Tube channel!

Cut out the template or sketch out a freeform shape, planning where your test tubes will go.

Mark out the foam you need to cut away to fit the test tubes on layers 2-5.

Add on layer 6 to complete the form. Let it dry really well.
Picture
Use a palette knife to apply a spackle texture. Make sure there's a thin layer of spackle over the entire form.

Prime if you want to. Apply 2-3 good coats of acrylic paint.

When dry, add in your test tubes.

Trace your shape onto foam board and cut out six copies.

Stack and glue layers 2-5 on top of layer 1. Be careful when aligning the openings at the top.

Sand down the sides to smooth out all the layers. Don't forget your dust mask!

When the spackle is dry, lightly sand down any rough spots. Make sure the insides of the test tube spots are smooth.

Apply 1-2 coats of DIY matte finish (glue + cornstarch).

Fill the test tubes with water, add some plant cuttings, and display them on your window sill.
