Watch the BUILD VIDEO for this and get more Pringles Can Craft Ideas HERE!

Fake food is having a moment and this  Pringles can craft idea is playing right into that trend! Whether it’s food-themed decor and furniture at your local home decor store, or food-themed DIY projects on your social media feed - it feels like fake food art and design is everywhere.

You can hop on this trend by making a set of 3 fake mini  cakes with a chip can and some household spackle. I mounted mine on an inexpensive frame and hung them on the wall.

Grab a can of  chips and let’s make some fun and kitch food art! The video companion to this article is here.

Step 1: Mark and cut the can
Step 1: Mark and cut the can

Stack some books to the height where you want to cut the chip can.

  • Place a marker on top of the books and hold it steady.

  • Keeping the can flat on the table, rotate the can against the marker to draw a level line.

  • Carefully cut along the marked like with a sharp tool

  • Cut one cylinder for each cake..

Step 2: Create the base and top
Step 2: Create the base and top

  • Cut out circles from sturdy cardboard to fit the tops and bottoms of the chip can slices.

  • Hot glue these cardboard pieces onto the chip can slices to form a solid base and top for each “cake.

Step 3: Frost with spackle and let dry
Step 3: Frost with spackle and let dry

  • Use household spackle to “frost” your cakes. (My spackle is pink when wet but dries white.)

  • With a palette knife, apply spackle to the sides and top of each cake. Don’t worry about perfection—visible strokes add charm!

  • Allow the spackle to dry completely.

Step 4: Paint
Step 4: Paint

  • Paint the cakes with a couple coats of craft acrylic paint.

  • Pastel colours look the most like real frosting, but you can use whatever colour scheme you’d like!

  • Allow the paint to dry completely.

Step 5: Fill the piping bag
Step 5: Fill the piping bag
  • Fit a cake decorator tip onto a disposable piping bag.

  • Fill the bag with spackle, ensuring there are no air bubbles.

  • Practice piping on your work surface or a scrap of paper before working on your cakes.

Step 6: Pipe "Frosting" onto the cake
Step 6: Pipe "Frosting" onto the cake

  • Place your fake cake on a piece of waxed paper.

  • Pipe small blobs of spackle to create rosettes around the base and top of each cake.

  • Add a big swirl of frosting in the center top of your cake.

Step 7: Finishing touches
Step 7: Finishing touches
  • Add fake fruit, sprinkles, or whatever other fun bits you can find to spruce up your cake.

  • Allow the piped spackle to dry thoroughly.

Step 8: Peel of waxed paper
Step 8: Peel of waxed paper
  • When the spackle is thoroughly dry, gently peel the waxed paper from the cake.

  • If your spackle is really crumbly, applying a clear coat at this stage will help.

Step 9: Assemble wall art (optional)
Step 9: Assemble wall art (optional)

  • Use adhesive hook-and-loop fasteners to attach the cakes to a frame filled with black poster board.
